Art-tech platform MEKKIKI: a pilot event for connoisseurs
Art-tech start-up MEKKIKI PROJECT, together with tensorX Co., has announced a trial launch of “MEKKIKI” platform for art connoisseurs in Tokyo’s BASEMENT GINZA. The pilot event is scheduled to start on 12 September (Thu) and last until 16 September (Mon) 2019.
The forthcoming event is collaboration with artist Katsufumi Takihana who will be presenting his solo exhibition themed as “Counteraction of muted generation” for the first time in Japan.
What is MEKKIKI?
Inspired by the Japanese concept of “mekiki”, which stands for a sharp eye for things, MEKKIKI platform aims to popularize art with the use of technology.
While there are different ways of combining art with technology such as using technology for artistic expression, MEKKIKI proposes to blend art with technology so that not just a privileged few but anyone interested in art would be able to enjoy it.
According to MEKKIKI, the value of art can be enhanced through “perception” and “desire to possess”.
When viewers point their smartphone camera at the exhibits, machine-learning technology automatically recognizes each exhibit and directs viewers to MEKKIKI web site, where they can rate an object by giving it a number of points called “Mek”.
This way, as each viewer rates an exhibit, the value of art works is enhanced by accumulated points.
The project also aims to create a community space for art connoisseurs where viewers can post comments and discuss art.
MEKKIKI plans to organize more pilot events aiming to create a universal platform in response to the needs of our times.
